Taking another element from the Earth, Chris Bennett uses clay, to capture human figures and animal wildlife in his sculptures. He carefully observes the relationships of his subjects to capture their essence. Students will be able to learn the basics of clay sculpture in a dedicated studio in historic Bentonsport from an accomplished artist and instructor.  

Class Fee: $90 per student.

Jul 23rd » Paddle Into The Past: The Geology & Archaeology of the Des Moines River

Discover how the Des Moines River sculpted its valley and how it sculpted the life of the past inhabitants of Iowa. Join Cherie E. Haury-Artz, ​Education Assistant at the Office of the State Archaeologist, and Joe Artz, Senior Geoarchaeologist at EarthView Environmental, as they co-lead a paddle combining the local geology and archaeology of the area. This is an official Des Moines River Water Trails event cosponsored by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Jefferson County Conservation. Pre-registration is required and participation is limited. If you do not have your own canoe or kayak, some are available for loan. The trip is open to all, but children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants may register by calling (641)-472-4421 or emailing dmriverwatertrail@gmail.com.

This class is designed to explore the current trend of using watercolor to start a work (known as underpainting) and finishing it with pastels. This class will begin with a brief demonstration on the technique. Students then are encouraged to work from a still life set up. Creating from a photograph is optional. Hand out material covering basic drawing techniques included.

Any child that attends Van Buren, Harmony, or is homeschooled in Van Buren County is encouraged to attend.  Free backpacks and school supplies are given to each student that attends the fair.  There will be booths with give-a-ways and information.  There will even be a free school dental screening available.  Event sponsored by Child Abuse Prevention Council.

After years of providing shelter for livestock, many old barns are being given a new purpose – providing a background for an outdoor art project. Barn quilts are bright and bold public art pieces that celebrate agriculture and rural life. They may be found in almost a third of Iowa’s counties and 25 states. In this class, students will learn the basics of barn quilt painting and create a 12” X 12” barn quilt and will leave with patterns and the knowledge to create more quilts in a variety of sizes.

The chair caning class consists of the basic 7 step method of caning a chair. We will go through each step starting with removing the old cane, lacing the new cane from hole to hole, tying off each step and then finish with the binder cane that completes the chair.

Aug 6th » Villages Folk School - Blacksmithing: Forge Welding

This is a one day workshop devoted to learning the basics of forge welding. We will cover the building of a proper forge fire, scarfing or joint preparation, hammer techniques for welding, as well as all aspects of beginning forge welding. We will cover lap welds, "T" welds, "L" welds and corner welding. This workshop is intended for students who have some forging experience and good hammer control, but is also not beyond the grasp of the beginner. This will be an intense workshop with welding all day. If you can work it in, you may find time to complete one simple project, but it is intended to get you welding. Come prepared to go home knowing how to weld several joints.

Class Fee: $115 per student includes coal and all materials

: Come join in on a total sensory experience at Historic Bonaparte Pottery at the raku firing. Individuals may purchase a piece of bisque pottery, glaze it, then watch it be fired. Potters will be firing the kiln throughout the day. There is the roar of the fire, then smoke. While you wait you can roast a hotdog or make a smore. When your pottery is uncovered it will have a beautiful shiny finish.  Cost: $20+ (depending on piece)

Whether you need to fine tune your skills or would like to try paddling for the first time, this is the program for you! The class, taught by a certified instructor, will help you learn basic maneuvers and strokes, parts of the boat, how to navigate and “read” a river, and allow you to make the most of your water-time. Participants will spend the morning on flat water at Lake Sugema before heading out on the river. If only the river could talk!  Join local historian, Michael Zahs, as he shares history through the eyes of the Des Moines River.  He will be sharing the fascinating history of the river as it flows through Van Buren County, including past river traffic, the lock & dam system, exploration along the river, the Morman Trail crossing, and the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps).  

This is an official Des Moines Water Trails event co-sponsored by the IA DNR & Jefferson County Conservation.  Pre-registration is not required.
