This workshop will introduce you to the basic methods of making simple tools. We will cover tool steels, forging of tool steel, and heat treatment and tempering of tools. In this workshop you will make a simple chisel and a center punch to take home. This workshop is intended for students with some forging experience and good hammer control.

Jul 4th » Keosauqua 4th of July Celebration

The Keosauqua Lions will host an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake & Sausage breakfast from 7am-10:30am in the City Park. Lunch will be served beginning at 11am. Kids Pedal Pull and Kids Games will be held in the City Park beginning at 2:00pm. BINGO will be held at the Senior Center at 2:00pm. The Silver Mine will be held at 4:00pm. There will also be a Petting Zoo, Bounce House and Kiddie Train. Raffle drawing for cash prizes will be held prior to a spectacular Fireworks Display over the river at dusk. Live musical entertainment by the Harvest Band on the riverfront stage at 6:00pm.

After years of providing shelter for livestock, many old barns are being given a new purpose – providing a background for an outdoor art project. Barn quilts are bright and bold public art pieces that celebrate agriculture and rural life. They may be found in almost a third of Iowa’s counties and 25 states. In this class, students will learn the basics of barn quilt painting and create a 12” X 12” barn quilt and will leave with patterns and the knowledge to create more quilts in a variety of sizes.

Volunteer clean-up of the Lower Des Moines River hosted by the Iowa DNR.  53 miles of River cleanup.  Paddling up to 15 river miles a day, loading your boat with trash as you go.  There is a limited number of canoes available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Daily educational programs, open to the public.  Catered meals.  Tent camping area provided at night.  Volunteering can be done for a day, week, or anytime in between.  Pre-register online, by 6/17/16, to guarantee meals and avoid a late fee.  Registration (mail-in) Form

Taking another element from the Earth, Chris Bennett uses clay, to capture human figures and animal wildlife in his sculptures. He carefully observes the relationships of his subjects to capture their essence. Students will be able to learn the basics of clay sculpture in a dedicated studio in historic Bentonsport from an accomplished artist and instructor.

Jul 23rd » Paddle Into The Past: The Geology & Archaeology of the Des Moines River

Discover how the Des Moines River sculpted its valley and how it sculpted the life of the past inhabitants of Iowa. Join Cherie E. Haury-Artz, ​Education Assistant at the Office of the State Archaeologist, and Joe Artz, Senior Geoarchaeologist at EarthView Environmental, as they co-lead a paddle combining the local geology and archaeology of the area. This is an official Des Moines River Water Trails event cosponsored by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Jefferson County Conservation. Pre-registration is required and participation is limited. If you do not have your own canoe or kayak, some are available for loan. Jul 26th » Safe & Healthy Kids Fair

Any child that attends Van Buren, Harmony, or is homeschooled in Van Buren County is encouraged to attend.  Free backpacks and school supplies are given to each student that attends the fair.  There will be booths with give-a-ways and information.  There will even be a free school dental screening available.  Event sponsored by Child Abuse Prevention Council.

Jul 30th » Shimek Speedway Go-Kart Races

Join the excitement each Saturday night for these kid & adult go-kart races!  No admission fee for spectators.  To enter a go-kart you must own the kart & it must pass inspection.  Pit passes $13.
