Jun 16th » Van Buren County Museum Crawl

Join the Van Buren County Museum Crawl for a great time. Guided tours, demonstrations, experience pioneer life and take a walk to the past in our museums. There is no admission fee, however, donations are appreciated. A passport map will be at featured locations. Get it punched at every stop to enter in a drawing for a Van Buren County gift basket. 

The Pearson Complex will have 1800’s costumes you can step into for a photo on your device, children will be holding class in the One Room School, tour guides will be dressed in period clothing, demonstrations of daily living in and around the cabin will take place all day, you can tour the Pearson Family home which was on the Underground Railroad. “The Galvinators” will play from 1-3pm. With original songs about Van Buren County. Children activities such as spelling bee, paper boat race and recess games. Refreshments including switchel, mint tea & stone ground cornbread will be served.

Morris Park will have huckster wagon, mystery tool identification quiz, rare bustle bench and clothing display and kids activities.

Calico Press will have printing press demonstration from 9-11am and 1-3pm.

Friday 7-9pm: Donkeys will be numbered up and in pens. People will be able to just ride and a chance for anyone new to get their horses used to the donkey. No admission fee.

Saturday 11am-3pm: Full arena sort. All teams will be drawn, the number of rounds will be determined by the number of people. Teams of 3 people. $15 a person will enter you in all the rounds for the day. You will also need a $5 wristband if you are not camping. Sign up will be 10-10:45am. There will be a Jackpot round at the end of the practice rounds. This will cost $5 a person and each person can enter 3 times.

Jul 14th » 48th Annual Standard Flower Show

The public is invited to stroll among the lovely entries and see the prize-winning displays. Award winners will be announced at 2:00 PM. Admission is free.

The show theme is “Destination World” with each design division class named for locations of classic interest around the world, from Bali to the Canals of Venice. A collage of photos from around the world will be on display as well. There will be over 100 different classes of flowers, arrangements, potted plants, shrubs and vegetables on display. Both adult and junior divisions are offered.  Anyone, member or not, who is interested in entering vegetables or flowers can bring their entries from 2:30pm until 3:30pm on Friday afternoon or from 7am until 9am Saturday morning, July 14th. All entries must be in place by 9:30am. There is no charge for submitting an entry. If anyone has questions about entries or the show, call 641-680-1412 or 319-796-2207.

Members will hold a “Ways & Means” sale of baked goods, flowers, vegetables, photos and other donated items during the show.

Enjoy a week of fun at the Van Buren County Fair! Featuring: Fair Queen Contest, 4-H and FFA exhibit all week, kiddie amusement rides (Thur.-Sat.), Pedal Pull, Open Show Exhibits, Truck & Tractor Pull, Stumptown & The Boys Concert and more. 

Food vendors include Sweet & Saucy, the Methodist Food Stand, Sweet P's, Cheese Curds, the Myers Family and two food booths in the midway.

Bring your own supplies: Easel, canvas, paper, paints, pastels, frame, etc. All art pieces must be created on the fairgrounds between 5pm Thursday, July 19th through 5pm Saturday, July 21st. All art pieces will be released at 7pm. Cash Prizes, 1st Place: $300, 2nd Place: $200 and 3rd Place: $100.

Jul 27th - Jul 29th » Donkey Sorting Series

Friday 7-9pm: Donkeys will be numbered up and in pens. People will be able to just ride and a chance for anyone new to get their horses used to the donkey. No admission fee.

Saturday 11am-3pm: Full arena sort. All teams will be drawn, the number of rounds will be determined by the number of people. Teams of 3 people. $15 a person will enter you in all the rounds for the day. You will also need a $5 wristband if you are not camping. Sign up will be 10-10:45am. There will be a Jackpot round at the end of the practice rounds. This will cost $5 a person and each person can enter 3 times.

Travel about 102 miles down two Midwestern Rivers!
You will paddle about 40 miles down one of the larger rivers in Iowa, the Des Moines. You will then enter the Mississippi River just below Keokuk. The trip down the Mississippi River will take you through two locks on your way to the final destination in historic Hannibal, MO.

Friday 7-9pm: Donkeys will be numbered up and in pens. People will be able to just ride and a chance for anyone new to get their horses used to the donkey. No admission fee.

Saturday 11am-3pm: Full arena sort. All teams will be drawn, the number of rounds will be determined by the number of people. Teams of 3 people. $15 a person will enter you in all the rounds for the day. You will also need a $5 wristband if you are not camping. Sign up will be 10-10:45am. There will be a Jackpot round at the end of the practice rounds. This will cost $5 a person and each person can enter 3 times.

Sunday 11am-3pm: Sort-n-pen. All teams will be drawn, the number of rounds will be determined by the number of people. Teams of 3 people. $15 a person will enter you in all the rounds for the day. You will also need a $5 wristband if you are not camping. Sign up will be 10-10:45am. There will be a Jackpot round at the end of the practice rounds. This will cost $5 a person and each person can enter 3 times.

There will be year-end awards for top 3 teams presented at the final sort for both full arena and sort-n-pen.

The Birmingham Homecoming will be serving a Box Chicken Supper from 5-7pm at the City Park Shelter. Box chicken, baked beans, french fries, various desserts, and beverage for $8. A smaller meal consisting of chicken strips, baked beans, french fries, various desserts, and beverage for $5. There will also be kids bingo and kids cake walk.

Proceeds will be used to help finance various activities for Birmingham Homecoming on June 7-9, 2019.

Oct 27th » Howl-O-Ween Parade

Join the fun at the Howl-O-Ween parade in Bentonsport at 11am. Prizes will be given for the best owner and dog costume in the shelter house at 1:15pm. Free will donation lunch will be served at the shelter house after the parade. 

Trick or Treating for children will be from 12:00-1:00pm at the Bentonsport shops.

Registration and lineup will start at 10:30am at Paddle, Pedal and More, 21903 Hawk Dr. Bentonsport. Please have child's/your costume and dogs costume ready and to go by 10:55am. The Howl-O-Ween Parade will start at 11:00am.

A fun filled family night of musical entertainment and comedy by many Tri-State area musicians. Some of the musicians and vocalists have toured with award-winning Nashville recording artists. Former KILJ radio personality John Kuhens will MC the event. There will be some love songs and surprises throughout the evening! 

Featured musicians and vocalists: Rod Rider, Diana Upton-Hill, Amy Fellows, Tom Allen, Brandon Cochenour, Debbie Frank, and Mike Browning with many more to be listed later.

The Van Buren Community Players will be performing "Catch Me If You Can". Based on the hit film and the incredible true story, this musical comedy is about the life of Frank Abagnale, who, before his 19th birthday, successfully performed cons worth millions of dollars by posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot, a Georgia doctor, and a Louisiana parish prosecutor.

There will be a matinee on Sunday, March. 3rd at 2:00pm.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for age 18 and younger.
Sunday only for seniors 65 and older will be $8 for the matinee. 

Tickets available Feb. 4th at First Iowa State Bank, Keosauqua. Tickets will also be available night of the show at the doors if the show is not sold out.

The Keosauqua Public Library and the Van Buren County Genealogical Society are hosting Iowa Author and speaker Linda McCann.

Linda will focus her presentation around POWs in Iowa. “Iowa had about 25,000 German, Italian, and Japanese prisoners of war in the state from 1943 to 1946. There were two main camp; Algona and Clarinda, and about 17 branch camps in the state. The branch camps were short-term work projects usually during the summer and fall, on a specific project. Waverly and Charles City had branch camps in the northeast. Muscatine, West Liberty, Clinton
were among the camps in the southeast."

There is no cost and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The Van Buren County Cooperative Ministry is proud to present a living dramatization of Leonardo DaVinci’s "The Last Supper" -- an hour of drama by Ernest K. Emurian, with music and worship. 

The reenactment was first presented in 1971 in Keosauqua. Since then, it has been presented over 100 times in many locations throughout southeast Iowa and Missouri.

Free will offering will be taken. No admission fee.

Forage in the forest along the trails at Lacey-Keosauqua State Park! This Wild Edibles Hike will begin at 10:00am at the Beachhouse Lodge at Lacey-Keosauqua State Park. Friday 7-9pm: Donkeys will be numbered up and in pens. People will be able to just ride and a chance for anyone new to get their horses used to the donkey. No admission fee.

Saturday 11am-3pm: Full arena sort. All teams will be drawn, the number of rounds will be determined by the number of people. Teams of 3 people. $15 a person will enter you in all the rounds for the day. You will also need a $5 wristband if you are not camping. Sign up will be 10-10:45am. There will be a Jackpot round at the end of the practice rounds. This will cost $5 a person and each person can enter 3 times.

Sunday 11am-3pm: Sort-n-pen. All teams will be drawn, the number of rounds will be determined by the number of people. Teams of 3 people. $15 a person will enter you in all the rounds for the day. You will also need a $5 wristband if you are not camping. Sign up will be 10-10:45am. There will be a Jackpot round at the end of the practice rounds. This will cost $5 a person and each person can enter 3 times.

There will be year-end awards for top 3 teams presented at the final sort for both full arena and sort-n-pen.

Jun 6th » "Rock Hounds Day Camp"

Turn your child into a Geologist for the day! Rock Hounds will focus on rocks, fossils and end with a creek hike! Thanks to the Iowa DNR Water Trails for their partnership on this program which waives the program registration fee. 3rd-6th grade Van Buren County youth will get first preference for this camp. After May 15th if not filled, it will open up to youth entering 3rd-6th grade in all counties. Camp will be limited to twelve participants.

This is an official Des Moines River Water Trails event cosponsored by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Jefferson County Conservation. There is no cost for the camp, however, Pre-registration is required.

There will be prizes and kids games plus all kids ages 12 and under will receive a coupon for a FREE Ice Cream Cone at Misty's Malt Shop in Keosauqua!

Join the Van Buren County Museum Crawl for a walk through our past with guided tours & demonstrations of pioneer life. 

NEW this year, the Pearson House Museum Complex in Keosauqua will have a display of vintage aprons which includes over 1,000 aprons of all shapes and sizes. Many will bring back memories of the aprons "just like grandma wore". Tour guides will be dressed in period clothing, you can tour the Pearson Family home, which was a safe house on the Underground Railroad. Cool drinks of switchel, mint tea & lemonade will be offered.

Morris Park in Stockport will have a unique huckster wagon on display, mystery tool identification quiz...can you tell us what some of our tools were used for? See a rare bustle bench, clothing display and several free kids activities throughout the day.

Saturday 11am-3pm: Full arena sort. All teams will be drawn, the number of rounds will be determined by the number of people. Teams of 3 people. $15 a person will enter you in all the rounds for the day. You will also need a $5 wristband if you are not camping. Sign up will be 10-10:45am. There will be a Jackpot round at the end of the practice rounds. This will cost $5 a person and each person can enter 3 times.
