Mission Statement
Villages of Van Buren, Inc. is a volunteer membership organization established to coordinate and promote activities directed toward improving the economic conditions of all areas of Van Buren County, Iowa. Assistance is provided to individuals, businesses, and community organizations in their pursuit of local development efforts. In addition, Villages of Van Buren, Inc. will directly undertake efforts to facilitate community cooperation and initiatives in tourism development, community development, and business development and retention. The ultimate goal of Villages of Van Buren, Inc., is to maintain and enhance the quality of life of all Van Buren County residents.

Emily Starnes
Emily Starnes joined the Villages of Van Buren as Executive Director in July 2019, bringing a wealth of experience and a passion for her hometown. A proud graduate of Van Buren Community High School, Emily pursued her AA in Business Administration/Financial Management from the American Institute of Business and then earned her BA in Marketing and Corporate Communications from Simpson College. After honing her skills in Des Moines, she returned to Van Buren County, ready to make a difference.
Emily's diverse work background makes her the perfect fit for the Executive Director role, where she excels in promoting tourism and fostering community development for the Villages of Van Buren County, Iowa. Her commitment extends beyond her day-to-day duties as she serves on multiple boards in both tourism and economic development.
When she's not championing the Villages, Emily enjoys quality time with her two kids and sweet dog, along with family and friends. She's an avid nature lover, often found kayaking down the Des Moines River, exploring local lakes, or cultivating her garden oasis at home. Emily's perfect break includes a good book and the tranquility of the great outdoors. Her dedication to both her professional and personal life makes her a dynamic leader and a cherished member of the community.

Megan Jennings
Megan Jennings, a proud, lifelong native of Van Buren County and a graduate of Harmony High School, has been an integral part of the Villages of Van Buren team since May 2017. With a strong background in customer service and certifications in office management, Megan’s friendly smile and vast knowledge of the Villages’ history make her the perfect fit for greeting visitors and locals at the Welcome Center.
In May 2022, Megan expanded her expertise by becoming a certified professional guide, demonstrating her dedication to continuously enhancing her skills and knowledge. Her commitment to the community and passion for sharing the rich history of the Villages shines through in every interaction.
When she’s not at work, Megan loves spending time with her significant other, Sam, her two kids, and her family. She enjoys riding horses, fishing, hunting, and taking care of her bustling farm filled with animals. Megan’s enthusiasm for life and her community is truly contagious, making her a cherished member of the Villages of Van Buren team.

Sofia Hobbs
We are thrilled to have Sofia Hobbs on our team at the Villages of Van Buren! A Keosauqua native, Sofia is currently pursing her nursing degree at Indian Hills Community College. She previously graduated from Iowa Central Community College with two degrees, earning recognition on the Dean’s List every term and maintaining membership in the Iowa Central Honor Society. During her time there, she was also a standout member of the Iowa Central Dance Team, where her discipline, teamwork, talent, and dedication truly shined.
Sofia brings that same energy and strong work ethic to everything she does. Alongside her work with the Villages, she teaches dance at the studio she proudly calls home as a lifelong alumna, sharing her love of movement and mentoring the next generation of dancers. She also channels her creativity in the kitchen, working with Kodie at the beloved bakery, Kodie's Creations. Whether through dance, baking, healthcare, or tourism, Sofia brings creativity, care, and enthusiasm to every space she's part of.
At the Villages, Sofia's positive attitude shine. From greeting visitors at the Welcome Center with her signature warm smile to organizing event materials, assisting with day-to-day operations, and helping prepare for our many exciting summer activities, she tackles each task with ease and professionalism. She is a true asset to our small but mighty team, and we’re grateful to have her with us.
Outside of work and school, Sofia enjoys spending time with family and friends and lending a helping hand at home whenever needed. If you stop by the Welcome Center chances are Sofia will be the first friendly face you see—so be sure to say hello!
