Finding My Forever Home
Shared by Resident Christina Hedström
A few years ago, I moved to Keosauqua and found myself unexpectedly surrounded by generosity of spirit and a sense of family. This small town normalizes kindness as people look for ways to celebrate their vibrant community, support local businesses, and create a safe and healthy town to live in.
I moved from San Francisco in search of a historic home to restore, never knowing I would find my forever home. In the first months, nearly 100 people stopped by my house to meet me, welcome me to town, find out my plans for the old house, and learn about the newest Keosauquan. Just a few years later I have continued to receive community support as I opened Zinc, my interior design studio and gift boutique in the quaint downtown. Living here is a constant reminder of what community looks like. It looks like abundance, support, positivity, and, for me, that has translated into contentment and a sense of belonging.
What do I love about Keosauqua besides the safe streets, kind neighbors, and supportive community? I love the ever-changing seasons. I love the nature, from the birdsong in spring to the deer walking through the snow in winter. I love living near one of Iowa’s beautiful state parks, with trails to explore and swimming in the lake during the summer. Van Buren County is a vibrant area, and there is always something happening, from classes and concerts to food and festivals.
Moving from California, with mind-numbing traffic, to the slower pace of life in Southeastern Iowa has been an added bonus. Traffic here looks like farm equipment chugging along the shoulder, waiting for a deer to cross the road, or slowing down for an Amish buggy. There is no road rage here, instead you will get a steering wheel wave from the folks who call this place home. Small towns may not have everything you find in a big city, but there are several cities nearby, such as Des Moines, Chicago, and St. Louis. A short road trip will allow you to find museums, large events, or airports. Then, return to Van Buren County to skies so black you can see the Milky Way from your doorstep while breathing in the fresh, clean air of home.
