Bonaparte Pottery and Artisan Market

Step into a story shaped by clay, fire, and riverfront grit.

Established in 1865, Bonaparte Pottery stands today as a nationally recognized historic place and an official archaeological site. Founded by Sidney Parker and Thomas Hanback, the pottery operated from 1865–1895, producing functional stoneware that served households across the region. Remarkably, the original 1876 factory building still stands — a rare and tangible link to Iowa’s industrial heritage.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Original pottery pieces and molds that bring 19th-century craftsmanship to life
  • Insights into past archaeological excavations conducted on-site
  • The opportunity to watch artisans at work during special events, continuing the legacy of handmade pottery
  • A thoughtfully curated gallery gift shop featuring handcrafted items and one-of-a-kind finds
  • Peaceful moments beneath the shade trees along the scenic Des Moines River, where history and natural beauty meet

There’s something special about standing in a place where industry once thrived, hearing the river nearby, and watching modern hands carry forward a 150+ year tradition.
