Bentonsport Heritage Day

Enjoy Bentonsport as it was in the 1850s! Covered wagons will take visitors to meet 1850s characters throughout the day. 

IF Severe Storm: The event will be moved to August 6th.

10am–4:30pm - Wagons begin routes, demonstrations at shops and along the walkway, Big Guys Barbeque open, kettle corn popping, breakfast pastries for sale

10:30am - Midwest Frontier Stories – Ed and Leila Scharff tell true stories of happenings in southeast Iowa. Under the shade canopy between the She Shed and Iron and Lace

11am–12:15pm - Candle dipping with Sandi Dimmitt at shade canopy. Try this 1850s task!

11am–1pm - Mason House Inn serving pulled pork sandwiches, chips & ice cream puffs. John Lee Boyer troubadour – entertains where groups gather; Fidler Tom Shadonix at Greef Store

11am - BIA Pie/Dessert stand opens. Remains open until the desserts are gone.

Noon - Church Bell Rings

12:30pm - Midwest Frontier Stories – Ed and Leila Scharff return

1–2pm - Galvanators sing clever songs and play musical instruments in the gazebo. Gloria and Kurt Mielke and Lonna and Mark McGrath. Their music is about historic southeast Iowa. They play ukulele, washboard, button box, washtub bass, banjolele and resonator guitar

1pm - Cherie Haury-Artz from the U Of I Archeology Dept. at shad canopy with artifacts from presettlement of Lower Des Moines River

2pm - At Stone House: “How Did They Do That?” Cherie Haury-Artz from the U Of I
Archeology Dept. shares the story of the tools and technology used by ancient peoples that lived on the Lower Des Moines River before settlers arrived.

3-4pm - Galvanators continue their odyssey of clever variations of old-time standards

4pm - Drawing for a basket of items from the Bentonsport shops

5pm - Event closes

People demonstrating in addition to shop demonstrations include Leilani McDonald, Linda Widmer, Barb Krummel, and Ted Kralicek.
